Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT)

Byzantine fault Tolerance (BFT) is the ability of a decentralized network to identify and reject false information. It is vital for a network’s integrity because it enables the network to function even when a few nodes have been corrupted or become malicious. Without the BFT, participants in the network could provide false information and disrupt the blockchain’s functioning. BFT has been derived from a phenomenon called the ‘Byzantine Generals’ problem.’

According to this, to ensure the system functions even with malicious participants, some nodes need to agree on a strategy. A blockchain network must be Byzantine fault-tolerant, as its absence would lead to problems of double-spending.
