Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs)

EIPs stand for Ethereum Improvement Proposals, which are design documents that provide information to the Ethereum community or describe a new feature for the Ethereum blockchain, its processes, or its environment. They offer a framework for developing new features, technical standards, protocol enhancements, and for analyzing the state of the Ethereum ecosystem. EIPs enable developers, researchers, and other members of the community to work together in improving network capabilities while ensuring decentralized governance of the entire process of changing how Ethereum works.

An EIP includes an extensive specification of the design change, along with its rationale, technical specifications, layouts, and whether it requires application (for clients such as Geth or Nethermind) to operate effectively on the network. After being proposed, EIPs must be accepted by the Ethereum community and implemented in future network upgrades.

Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) have led to many of Ethereum’s key innovations, such as EIP-1559, which changed transaction fee mechanics, and EIP-4844, which laid the groundwork for the 2023 L2-focused Proto-Danksharding scalability breakthrough. EIPs establish a common framework for innovations and play an essential role in the evolution, security, efficiency, and sustainability of Ethereum.
