Genesis Block is the very first block of a blockchain network that serves as the base on top of which all other blocks are constructed. The Genesis Block, sometimes called Block 0 or Block 1, but since it has no predecessor to speak of, is unique in that it is hard-coded into the blockchain protocol.
The Genesis Block is the very first block in Bitcoin, which was mined by Satoshi Nakamoto on January 3, 2009, and so kick-started the birth of decentralized cryptocurrencies. This includes a nod to a newspaper headline, with many seeing this as a comment on the conventional financial world. Each blockchain network, such as Ethereum, private blockchains, etc., has a Genesis Block, which is the initial record of data that sets up the parameters and rules for that network. Genesis Block helps in maintaining blockchain integrity, the starting point in validating transactions, consensus mechanisms, and creating an immutable ledger.
